Pinners Conference & Expo
A full slate of these events for DIYers, crafters, photographers, and other creatives is available for 2024. The Pinners Conference schedule will kick off in February in Overland Park, Kansas, and make its way around the country, ending in Scottsdale, Arizona, in November. Check out the full schedule to see which city and date work for you.
January 2024
January: Crime Coverage Summits
Going beyond “if it bleeds, it leads,” this will be the first of two Crime Coverage Summits, hosted The Radio Television Digital News Association, in January to help TV newsrooms think critically about their reporting on the criminal justice system. The January 8-10 event will take place in Philadelphia, and a second summit will be held Jan. 17-19 in New Orleans. The Summits will examine “coverage of race and juveniles, gun violence, dealing with police, mental health in your newsroom and more, mixing in training from experts with peer-to-peer sharing and collaboration.”
Jan. 9-12: CES
CES is “the most influential tech event in the world.” It will be returning to Las Vegas in 2024 for a live, in-person event. More than 3,500 exhibitors from all over the world will meet with hundreds of media attendees to discuss how their innovations are building a better world. The 2024 event’s theme is “All Together. All On.” Sustainability, vehicle technology, VR, AI, space technology, and esports are just a few of the many topics that will be on display.
Jan. 10: Disruptive AI and Blabbing Chatbots: Are You Ready to Fight or Adapt?
This webinar will be hosted by the American Society of Journalists and Authors. Learn how AI could change your writing or editing career, and how to adapt to it. The panel experts will discuss what AI is, how it works and whether writers and researchers can use the tools effectively to brainstorm, research and outline new ideas.
Jan. 11: What You Need to Know About COVID Antivirals
This webinar from the National Press Foundation “aims to help journalists alleviate public confusion and answer pressing questions about access, costs and availability associated with the changes to coverage of COVID-19 antiviral treatments.” A panel of health and medical experts and a leading COVID journalist will answer viewer-submitted questions. As audiences navigate COVID-19 in a “post-pandemic” world, this webinar can be a great learning experience for health and science writers.
Jan. 12: Burnout & Stress: How journalists can manage both in 2024
A stressful year ahead, including a presidential election and the industry’s financial turmoil, means journalists should prioritize their mental health. This webinar from the National Press Club Journalism Institute will cover practical tips and effective methods for journalists and newsroom leaders to address stress and burnout.
Jan. 12-14: Novel Writing Virtual Conference
Looking to make the jump into book writing in 2024? This conference from Writer’s Digest University could be just the event for you. Seven award-winning and best-selling authors will cover the finer points of how to write a novel, including how to select your book topic and the mistakes to avoid. Attendees will also receive valuable feedback on their query letters for literary agents.
Jan. 15-17: Affiliate Summit West

Jan. 23: Stories to Watch 2024
Hosted by the World Resource Institute, Stories to Watch 2024 will focus on how we can move those in power to make the necessary shifts toward a net zero, climate-resilient future. Four stories will be presented that look at the “political barriers to effective climate action, how to fix the world’s dysfunctional food system, the missing link in the clean energy revolution, and climate change’s ‘silent killer’.”
Jan. 24-25: TravMedia IMM
Calling all travel writers! This global networking event connects the travel industry with editors, journalists, broadcasters, and influencers. Sessions will cover AI best practices, travel content for streaming platforms, sustainable travel, and more. IMM is free for media attendees and will “provide an unrivaled return on the time invested and help journalists plan a year’s worth of travel.” The event will take place at the Javits Center in New York City.
Jan. 26: Election 2024: How to use poll data to accurately inform the public
An election year means media coverage will be dominated by polling data. For journalists, it’s critical to understand how polling organizations conduct their surveys to accurately inform the public. This is a free National Press Club Journalism Institute webinar. Attendees will learn how to dissect polling data and incorporate it into their reporting in ethical and responsible ways.
Jan. 30-Feb. 1: The Southern C Summit
The Southern C Summit welcomes female entrepreneurs for three days of workshops, mentor sessions, social gatherings, and the ever-popular silent disco and swag market. Topics will cover the latest in e-commerce, media, marketing, and more. If you’re passionate about blogging, wellness, fashion, food, art, or media, this is a great event to check out. Both virtual and in-person ticket options are available. The in-person event will take place in Sea Island, Georgia.

Feb. 1-Sept. 26: Poynter Beat Academy
Register now for Poynter’s Beat Academy, a webinar series kicking off in February that “equips journalists with beat expertise, data know-how and excellent local and national sources.” Attend all or some of the weekly webinars, which will cover timely topics like climate change, the presidential election, transgender medical care, and the economy.
Feb. 2-3: Pinners Conference and Expo (Overland Park, KS)
DIY and craft bloggers will head to the first Pinners Conference of the year to learn from more than 100 workshops and browse the expansive expo floor. So far, the packed schedule of classes covers crafts like hand knitting, glass etching, macrame, sourdough 101, air fryer tips, and more.
Feb. 6: The Investigative Agenda for Climate Change Journalism
This webinar from the Global Investigative Journalism Network will bring together journalists to share ideas, strategies, and techniques for covering the climate crisis. A panel of journalists and experts will discuss the top priorities for investigative journalism on climate change, including the fossil fuel industry, government policies, climate change finance, and more. The webinar will be in English but will also be available in Arabic, French, and Spanish.
Feb. 7: Election data: Before Election Night, During and After
This is a free webinar from Investigative Reporters and Editors that is exclusive to IRE members. Election specialists from the AP, Texas Tribune, and Star Tribune will discuss their approaches to election storytelling, including explainers, dashboards, and post-election visual analysis.
Feb. 16-19: Women’s Travel Fest
In 2024, the annual Travel Fest will be headed to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The weekend retreat will feature curated talks, workshops, community exercises, and mindful practices for travel lovers and content creators. Sessions will cover video creation for social media, traveling (almost) free with credit card points, how to travel with a full-time job, train travel, and much more.
Feb. 22-25: IDEA Health and Fitness Summit
This event is a great option for fitness bloggers and vloggers. They can connect with other personal trainers, entrepreneurs, and business owners and learn new strategies to create change and get noticed in a crowded marketplace. Topics cover training techniques, nutrition, training science, and professional development.
Feb. 29-March 2: WORKBENCHcon
WORKBENCHcon is a “growing network of diyers, makers, influencers & bloggers discovering new techniques, products and skills all while learning how to take their businesses to the next level.” Sessions will cover topics like techniques for using tools and new equipment, skills for video production, and business practices for the content creator, with more to come. WORKBENCHcon will be held in Atlanta.
Feb. 29: Voices at Risk: Journalist Safety and Press Freedom during the Super-Election Year
More than 40 countries, representing more than 40% of the world’s population, are holding national elections in 2024 and journalists face serious risks as they work to cover the elections. This webinar from Media Defence and the International Women’s Media Foundation aims to “increase awareness of journalist safety during elections and emphasize how media workers are at the forefront of the struggle for democracy.”

March 4: What is service journalism and how do I do it right?
Join Tim Herrera, former editor of The New York Times’s service journalism desk Smarter Living, for a workshop on finding, reporting, writing, and pitching better service stories.
March 7-9: ACP Spring National College Media Conference
The Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) will bring together collegiate journalists and advisers from across California and the nation for a weekend full of helpful sessions, critiques, advice and feedback. In addition to coverage of the fundamentals, the event will also dive into the fast-changing environment of collegiate journalism and media. Attendees will head to beautiful La Jolla, California, for the conference.
March 7-10: NICAR 2024
IRE & NICAR will host the annual data journalism conference in Baltimore, Maryland. More than 175 sessions will fill the weekend, with topics including AI tools for data journalists, how to interpret weather data, Google Sheets best practices, coding tips and much more. Several networking sessions will also be available to help student journalists, LGBTQIA reporters, international reporters, women in media and journalists of color connect with their peers.
March 8: Online Harassment & Privacy Protections: What journalists need to know
All reporters need to be on the alert for potential online harassment and attacks. Join the National Press Club Journalism Institute for instruction on how to minimize your personal risk of online harassment and protect your private information. Topics will cover how to remove your personal information from the web, tools for privacy protection and more.
March 8-16: SXSW
SXSW will welcome a diverse group of innovators, storytellers, humanitarians and global thought leaders back to Austin, Texas, for nine days of collaboration. AI, climate change, civic engagement, and film and TV are just a few of the dozens of tracks available to attendees.
March 13-16: Tastemaker Conference
This popular food blogger event will take place in Chicago. Attendees will be treated to meals (of course), swag bags, workshops, panels and food excursions around the amazing Chicago food scene. Sessions will cover SEO, DEI, content creation, revenue growth and more helpful topics for food bloggers.
March 15: The Appeals Process: Steps to take when your FOIA requests are denied
This webinar from the National Press Club Journalism Institute will focus on practical advice on the records appeals process: how to start, how to track and how to succeed with your open records requests.
March 17-20: Alt Summit
Head to Palm Springs for the 2024 Alt Summit, which brings together thousands of women influencers and entrepreneurs and provides a “physical gathering place for that community and then incredible things happen.” Sessions will cover social media best practices, steps for building a personal brand, legal issues for influencers and more.
March 20: AI + Fact-Checking in an Election Year
This Zoom meetup from ONA will test out new AI tools designed to fact-check images, video and news articles. Attendees will complete exercises on how to use them and discover ways to use them to keep their communities informed about the election. Tickets are $25 or free for ONA members.
March 22: Career Day at the National Press Club
Career Day attendees will be able to meet dozens of recruiters from some of the top newsrooms and PR/communication firms in the Mid-Atlantic. Job search training and free professional headshots will also be available.
March 27: AP Photography Showcase: Capturing the Solar Eclipse
The solar eclipse on April 8 will be the last one for the next two decades, so you better get a good photo of it. During this webcast, an AP photographer will look at past eclipse photos and discuss how they were captured. The event is open to professional photographers and hobbyists and will include a Q&A session.

Multiple Dates: Pinners Conference & Expo

April 3-7: Craftcation
Calling all craft bloggers! Craftcation offers attendees more than 200 craft and business workshops. Visitors will “explore dozens of genres in our hands-on workshops where you’ll get instruction and inspiration to find your creative flow.” Workshops and sessions will cover everything from sewing to screenprinting, knitting, jewelry making, mixed media art and painting. The event will take place in Ventura, California.
April 4-6: Mom 2.0
Mom 2.0 is the “premier professional conference and gathering of influencers who create content online and on air in parenting, entertainment, food, politics, business, marketing, technology, social change, travel and design.” This year’s event will take place in Nashville, Tenn. Sessions will cover tax tips for content creators, how to monetize your brand effectively, travel content hacks, how to use AI in your work and much more.
April 9: Investigating Elections: Threat from AI Audio Deepfakes
AI-driven deepfakes are a serious concern heading into election season. According to the Global Investigative Journalism Network, “AI-generated audio simulations — in which a real voice is cloned by a machine learning tool to produce a fake message — are cheap to produce and easy to spread, and some media manipulation investigators warn that they could emerge as an even bigger threat to elections in 2024 and 2025 than fabricated videos.” Register for this GIJN webinar, during which three experts will share tips, tools, and resources to identify, investigate and verify potential deepfakes.
April 12-14: Women in Travel Summit
Creative entrepreneurs, influencers and other travel experts will head to Salt Lake City and Park City, Utah, for WITS 2024. They will “discuss future innovations, build dynamic collaborations, and change travel worldwide, all while supporting and empowering a diverse community.” Discussions will center around elevating women and underrepresented creators as well as current issues in travel. April 17-21: International Journalism Festival
Perugia, Italy, will again host the International Journalism Festival, the largest annual media event in Europe. Major topics for the 2024 event include AI, Ukraine, disinformation, climate reporting and collaborative journalism.
April 18-20: SABEW24 Annual Conference
The Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing (SABEW) will host its annual conference at the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University’s downtown Chicago campus. Newsroom leaders, early/mid-career journalists, academics, students and PR pros are encouraged to attend. Sessions will cover topics like business journalism, AI in the newsroom, news deserts, how to tell business stories on social media and more.
April 24: AI Tools for Journalists Part II
April 30: How to Cover Mental Health and Treatment-Resistant Depression
This panel hosted by The National Press Foundation will bring together health and psychology experts – as well as a journalist who has written about her own treatment-resistant depression – to answer questions on this complex medical condition and the different solutions being explored.
May 2024
May 1: Environmental Journalists on the Frontlines of Democracy
Ahead of World Press Freedom Day (May 3), the Wilson Center’s Environmental Change and Security Program and the Society of Environmental Journalists “will celebrate the important role of environmental journalism and highlight the need to protect journalists around the world from surveillance, censorship, oppression, and violence.” The event ties into this year’s World Press Freedom Day theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the Environmental Crisis.”
May 2: Preparing data for the AI revolution
As AI continues to be implemented across industries, media and entertainment marketers and creators are focused on AI-driven insights as a key to success. But what AI tech should they use and how should they use it? During this session, Gaby Hosokawa, senior product marketing manager of media and entertainment at Salesforce, and Maarten van Hoek, media industry strategy and scale leader at Salesforce, will discuss the necessary elements for preparing data ecosystems that unlock AI’s full potential.

Multiple Dates: U.S. Election Safety Summer
This free webinar series is hosted by the Committee to Protect Journalists, the International Women’s Media Foundation and PEN America. It runs from June 4 to July 30 and will help journalists prepare for coverage of the U.S. general election and related events. Webinars will provide safety guidance ensuring physical safety when covering rallies and protests, understanding the legal rights of journalists, and addressing psychological safety and mental health. June sessions will be:

June 5-7: PJMA 2024
The annual Public Media Journalists Association conference will take place in Washington, DC. This year’s event will “focus attention on how local news plays a vital role in strengthening democracy and build the capacity of public media journalists as they cover the 2024 elections.” The schedule includes a wide variety of session topics, including “A Workshop For Math-Averse Reporters,” “How To Collect Good Audio And Correct Bad Audio,” “Mindfulness for Journalists” and “Make Politics Boring (Again): Outfoxing AI, Deepfakes & The Nationalization Of Local Politics.”
June 6-9: Health Journalism 2024
This event, hosted by the Association of Health Care Journalists, will be held in New York City. “Join us for an unparalleled event as we bring together journalists, health care professionals, policymakers and experts from various fields to explore and discuss the latest trends, challenges and innovations in health journalism,” the site says. In addition to the 75 sessions covering a variety of healthcare topics, three uniquely themed field trips for journalists registered for the conference will be available.
June 14: AI + Transparency: How newsrooms can build and maintain audience trust
The Online News Association (ONA) and Trusting News will host this virtual, practical training on building trust through transparency about AI use for your journalism. Come away with best practices for explaining your newsroom’s AI policies in a way that builds trust with your community.
June 18: Image Creation Tools
ONA will host this session to help journalists write AI prompts to create images, fact-check images to determine if they’re AI-generated, and examine legal, ethical and attribution/transparency issues with using the software. The session will explore tools like MidJourney, DALL-E, Adobe Firefly and more. The virtual event will be hosted on Zoom.
June 20-23: IRE 2024
The annual investigative journalism conference will take place in Anaheim, Calif. The packed weekend will feature nearly 200 sessions covering a wide variety of topics. Some of the sessions include “Fighting for time: How to make the most of your best investigations,” “Investigating climate change,” “Gender & reproductive rights track: Covering the local beat” and “AI and automation for the local beat.”
June 26-28: GlobalFact 11
GlobalFact is the world’s largest fact-checking summit, presented by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) at the Poynter Institute in partnership with Zašto ne. Tracks will include Reporting and Editing, Sustainability, Public Policy, AI/Technology, Media Literacy, and Research and Political Science. The event will be held in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and virtual tickets will also be available.

July 9-13: NAHJ Conference
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Conference & Expo. The event will take place in Hollywood, Calif., and feature a packed schedule with nearly 90 unique workshops and trainings. Climate journalism, election reporting, augmented reality and visual journalism are just a few of the many topics that will be covered.
July 10: Image Creation Mini Lab
Join the Online News Association (ONA) for this 45-minute session to experiment with various prompts for AI image creation. Attendees will be able to show off their work, discuss successes and failures with the tech, and more.
July 10-12: AAN Convention
This year’s Association of Alternative Newsmedia Convention will be in Charleston, S.C. (lending the event its very apt nickname: CharlestAAN 2024). The Editorial/Design and Publication/Marketing tracks will include a number of helpful sessions with actionable takeaways for attendees. The schedule includes sessions like “How to get reporters through national outlet partnerships?” “How can AAN members take advantage of Press Forward” and “50 Story Ideas in 50 Minutes.”
July 12-13: NAMLE 2024
The annual conference from the National Association for Media Literacy Education “provides valuable resources, technology, teacher practice and pedagogy, assessments, and core concepts of media literacy education.” The virtual event will feature sessions like “Media Literacy in the Face of AI: Multimodality Learning,” “Learning to Discern Election-related Manipulative Information” and “Inspiring ethical content creators: Igniting youth and the public good.”
July 17: How to use AI to help with grant writing
Another mini lab from ONA, this session will be hosted by ICFJ Knight Fellow and Newsroom Robots Podcast Host Nikita Roy. Attend the live demo and get tips on using generative AI tools to brainstorm and refine grant applications. You’ll also get a look at real-world examples of newsrooms that have successfully used AI to help with grant applications.
July 24: AI Audio Innovations: Transforming Content Creation and Engagement
Davar Ardalan, audio industry veteran and Founder of TulipAI, will host this ONA event. “Tailored for newsrooms in radio and podcasting, participants will delve into practical demonstrations, discussions on real-world applications, and critically examine the ethical implications of AI in the industry,” the site explains.
July 25-27: Indigenous Media Conference
Oklahoma City will host this year’s Indigenous Media Conference — the city was chosen specifically to bring further awareness to the free press challenges facing tribal nations across the U.S. “Oklahoma is home to 39 federally recognized tribes. There is so much to learn from the distinctive media landscape within the state and I’m looking forward to a phenomenal conference program that highlights the unique challenges and joys that come with reporting on our Indigenous communities here,” said Rebecca Landsberry-Baker, IJA Executive Director.
July 29: Implementing AI in Your Classroom or Student Newsroom
During this session from ONA, UIC Senior Lecturer and JournalistsToolbox.ai Founder Mike Reilley will cover ways to implement AI in the journalism classroom and student newsrooms, create AI policies and more.

Aug. 7-11: AAJA 2024
Head to Austin, Texas, for the annual Asian American Journalists Association conference. This year’s theme, Meeting the Moment, “recognizes that amid tough times, our work as Asian American and Pacific Islander journalists is more important than ever.” Among the session topics: reporting on gun violence with care; reproductive rights and the power of women of color voters; and covering Israel’s war on Gaza.
Aug. 8: AI + Data Journalism
Another great event from ONA, this 90-minute practical training session will cover AI-driven tools for data scraping, data analysis and data visualization.
Aug. 8-11: AEJMC Conference
This year will mark the 107th annual conference from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). The event will take place in Philadelphia and this year’s theme is Representation and Voice — The Future of Democracy. “Connecting Journalism Research and Practice,” “Powering Local News: Universities Making a Difference,” “How is Technology Impacting Journalists?” and “Creativity and Responsibility in the Age of AI” are just a few of the workshops scheduled for the weekend.
Aug. 11: How to write better personal essays

This free session from ONA will help attendees learn more about the capabilities and implications of AI in audio. You’ll be able to “explore what generative AI audio is, learn about available tools, discuss ethical considerations, and even create historical reenactments using synthetic voices.”

Open News hosts this open-source, hands-on conference for journalists. The program is focused on the practical challenges that news technology and data teams encounter every day. The schedule, which is still being finalized, includes sessions on community listening, journalism funding, UX and accessibility, and journalist burnout. SRCCON will be held in Minneapolis.
Aug. 19-22: Podcast Movement
Thousands of podcasters and industry pros will head to Washington, DC, for Podcast Movement. The four days will include more than 100 educational sessions and workshops, networking events and parties, and a podcasting expo and trade show.
Aug. 22: What is service journalism and how do I do it right?
Tim Herrera, former editor of NYT’s service desk Smarter Living, will host this 90-minute session. You’ll learn about finding, reporting, writing and pitching better service stories.
Aug. 23-24: California Pinners Conference
Dedicated to “creative enthusiasts, DIY aficionados and expert makers,” the Pinners Conference will offer more than 100 hands-on classes and enough vendors to shop until you drop. Classes will cover topics like Halloween crafts, macrame, calligraphy, makeup tutorials and charcuterie board tips. The event will be held at the Fairplex in Pomona, Calif.

This year’s Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists National Convention will take place in Los Angeles. Breakout sessions include “A better path to fair coverage of LGBTQ+ communities,” “Risk Assessment and Planning for LGBTQ+ journalists,” “Tips on Interviewing LGBTQ+ Youth” and “Guiding the Next Generation of Journalists.”
Sept. 5-7: Independent News Sustainability Summit
This summit from LION Publishers will “gather independent news publishers, industry experts, and supporters of independent news to share expert knowledge, hard-won lessons, and actionable advice on running a news business while being in community with people who care deeply about strengthening the local news ecosystem.”

The Online News Association’s annual event focuses on the future of digital media and will be held in Atlanta, Georgia. Attendees range from digital media audience and analytics professionals to news product, strategy, and business executives and entrepreneurs.
